Student Experience

Also included on this page is information regarding our application process.

What makes SALT distinct from traditional theological education?

  • It’s local: Students don’t need to relocate to attend the school. Learning is done in the location where each student lives and works.
  • It’s customizable: Each student’s learning is contextualized and applied for the specific and unique life-setting of that student.
  • It’s Learning Community-based: Students do individual work while also benefiting from group input, feedback, and any work done together as a team.
  • It’s competency-based: The curriculum isn’t focused on how much time is spent in class or doing homework, nor on letter grades. Rather, it affirms at graduation that students have the integrated knowledge, skills, and character needed to be effective in personal and vocational life.
  • It’s mentor-based: A Mentor Team of three people works with each student during the program. Each mentor focuses primarily (but not exclusively) on a specific area of the student’s development–one for academic development, another for vocational development, and the third for character development. in other areas of life.
  • It’s cost effective: Being subscription-based means the sooner a student demonstrates proficiency, the sooner studies are complete. You will pay $3,600 per year. Compare that to the cost of the least expensive non-denominational seminary, which is around $35,500 per year.

Typical Week for a Student:

It is recommended to set aside approximately 10 hours per week for work related to the MA BA-MA Learning Experiences (LEs). Doctoral work will require about 20 hours on average per week. Each week, the student will access a specific LE on the user-friendly learning management system (LMS) called “Pathwright,” which is on the Kairos University (KU) website. Each LE will guide a student in specific areas of personal development and any work required to show competency related to it. This online system makes the learning process more convenient and accessible. Students will also have virtual access to KU’s extensive library resources.

Although each student will do their own work, they will learn in the context of a collaborative and supportive Learning Community (LC) throughout the degree program’s length.

  • MA and BA-MA LCs are usually composed of 5-7 students and meet weekly or twice a month (either in-person or virtually) for approximately two hours (though they may meet more often at the beginning of the degree program). Together, the LC and the facilitating Faculty Mentor determine this collaborative learning environment and foster a sense of community and support. Throughout the program, students will typically spend four hours per month to connect with personal and vocational mentors.
  • Doctoral LCs are composed in ways that are similar and different to that above depending on the needs within the individual doctoral programs and the entire doctoral community context. Each learning community group will decide how often they will meet, but that will usually once a week or twice a month.  A student then meets at least once a month with each mentor on his or her Mentor Team. Smaller LC meetings can occur as needed for students that need interaction related to the specific DMin or PhD work.

What makes SALT distinct from traditional theological education?

Admission– Process & Requirements

As an Integrated Partner with Kairos University (KU), students interested in the SALT programs will apply through SALT admissions instead of KU admissions (i.e., do not use https://kairos.edu/apply/) as SALT admissions processes are slightly different depending on the program.

MA and BA-MA program applicants:

  1. Send a request for an application to the SALT Registrar at registrar@salt-edu.global.
  2. Submit the completed application as instructed in the application.  Request transcripts from your previous education and send reference forms as instructed in the application form.
  3. Send your resume (instructions in the application form) to registrar@salt-edu.global.
  4. Transcript requirements:
  •  MA applicants: Send transcripts from the university or college through which you earned a bachelor’s degree and transcripts from any post-bachelors institutions you attended.
  • BA-MA applicants: Send high school transcripts and transcripts from any post-secondary institutions that you attended.

        6.  Once the application and all supporting documents are received, the Admissions Team will review the application and communicate the decision to the student.

Further instructions will be provided when the  applicant is accepted by SALT

Doctoral Program applicants:

  1. Send an email to the SALT Registrar at registrar@salt-edu.global. In it, state your interest in either the Doctor of Ministry (DMin) program or Doctoral of Philosophy (PhD) program.
  2. Someone from the requested doctoral program will contact you to arrange a pre-application online interview.
  3. When the interview occurs, it will provide an opportunity for you and the interviewer to get to know one another more personally, and for you to clarify questions you may have about the program. The goal is to help both sides in the potential relationship determine if the program is the right one for you. If not, the interviewer may have a recommendation on where you could find that right program based on your area of interest.
  4. The Doctoral Admissions Team (DAT) will review the result of the interview and you will be informed about it. If moving forward with the application process is approved, the Registrar will inform you on how to complete the next step in the application process with the required application and any associated documents.
  5. Once the application and related documents are received, the DAT will review them; communicate to you whether continuing the application process is approved; and, if so, give you the remaining steps in the process.
  6. Once all steps are complete, the DAT will make a final decision on your application and, if approved, invite you to join the program. If you accept the invitation, the Registrar will submit required documentation on your behalf to KU for its review and confirmation for admission.
  7. If KU confirms admission, you will receive a letter of acceptance from them as one of their students. Once SALT knows you have been  accepted by KU, the SALT Registrar will send you further information about beginning your studies.

Communication During the Application Process

Once SALT receives a new application, we will send an acknowledgement that the application has been received. Once the Registrar’s Office has received all of the other documents, we will generally inform you of the admissions decision and next steps within two weeks. In addition to the application, the required documents include a resume, relevant transcripts, and two references (one a pastoral reference and the other from someone who knows you well). If you haven’t received any further information from the Registrar’s Office 2-3 weeks after receiving the first notification that your application has been received, please send an email of inquiry to registrar@salt-edu.global.
